CABLE AND WIRELESS PUT MONEY IN MEDIA COVERAGE OF CRICKET WORLD CUP 2007
TELECOMMUNICATIONS GIANT Cable & Wireless is pumping $2.5 million into electronic media coverage for Cricket World Cup 2007.
Cable & Wireless, a regional sponsor for the mega event, has teamed up with the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) to ensure free coverage of the World Cup to television viewers and radio listeners in 23 nations across the region.
The two companies signed off on the deal, which also includes coverage of the forthcoming Champions Trophy in India, at a cocktail reception at Hilton Barbados on Tuesday night.
In addition to match coverage of World Cup matches, the agreement also includes sponsorship of a post-match commentary programme At the Wicket.
Cable & Wireless (Barbados) chief operating officer Jim Pitchford signed the agreement on behalf of the telecommunications entity, while CMC's chief operating officer Errol Clarke did so on behalf of the broadcasters.
"I am sure my colleagues in the region will support me when I say that we are very enthusiastic about this association with CMC, since it complements our decision to become an official sponsor of the World Cup," Pitchford said.
"Everybody loves the sport of cricket and I would venture further to say that with the exception of the CMC's network of media organisations evidenced by your presence here today, nothing connects the Caribbean like cricket.
"This ability to connect the region is and will always be our reason for partnering with organisations that afford us the opportunity to maximise our efforts to do just that – keep the region."
Prior to becoming an official sponsor of Cricket World Cup, Cable & Wireless was also the sponsor of West Indies cricket from 1986 to 2004.
CMC, which was mandated to acquire the rights for the 2007 World Cup on behalf of member stations of the Caribbean Broadcasting Union and the Caribbean News Agency, will be airing the event to the region for the third time.
Clarke described this undertaking as the largest project CMC had embarked on to date.
"We look forward to delivering every game on television and more than 40 on radio," he said.
"We will ensure that the region is entertained and informed as we host the cricketing world in its premier event.
"I would like to thank Cable & Wireless for helping to make this venture possible and look forward to partnering with them in delivering a successful event to every house, every eye and every ear in the region."
