DE LA HOYA CONFIRMS MAYWEATHER DATE

Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather have agreed terms to meet in one of the richest fights in boxing history.

The pair will clash next May in either Las Vegas or Los Angeles, in a light-middleweight contest which could expect to exceed an unprecedented two million pay-per-view buys.

De La Hoya told ESPN.com: "Done deal! I wanted it. How could I not be excited? I took this fight because, like always, I always want to take on the best."

The 33-year-old De La Hoya had intimated he would retire after a fight with Mayweather, but he added: "It is not going to be my last fight. Call me crazy, but I changed my mind."

Mayweather also indicated he would quit after one more fight, following his lop-sided points win over Carlos Baldomir to claim the WBC welterweight title last week.

Mayweather's win over Baldomir earned him a version of a world title at a fourth weight. De La Hoya has won world title versions in six weight divisions.

Both fighters will receive career-best purses for the fight. De La Hoya will earn in excess of £13.1million while Mayweather will pocket over £5.3million.
