DID THE WEST INDIES SELECTORS LIE TO MICHAEL HOLDING??????
The Facts are in, and Michael Holding was wrong in his attack on Brian Charles Lara and Ken Gordon, perhaps he was misled.
Chief Cricket Operating Manager at the West Indies Cricket Board, Zorol Barthley has been in the news recently, On Saturday on I95.5fm isports Programme in Trinidad, hosted by Andre E Baptiste, he stated that THE SELECTORS were all privy to the decision delay the naming of the team, and that it was unfortunate that Brian Charles Lara was being singled out.
First, the West Indies Cricket Board in their press release stated- Mr. Gordon clarified that the decision of the Selection Committee had nothing to do with the President’s opinion and that he was simply advised of the decision taken by the Selectors which appeared to be based on good advice. Chief Cricket Operations Officer, Zorol Barthley, whose responsibilities include liaison with the Selection Committee, wrote to the President on September 5, 2006 confirming that the selectors had asked for a deferral of the team selection for the tour of Pakistan until after the Malaysian Tri-Nation Series., -Then Michael holding said on Saturday “……. There can be no denial that the entire selection panel was not consulted in this matter as Andy Roberts and Clyde Butts knew nothing about it.………The WICB defense is that Chief Cricket Operations Manager Zorol Barthley whose responsibilities include liaison with the selection committee, wrote to the president on September 5th, 2006, confirming that the selectors had asked for a deferral of the team selection for the tour of Pakistan until after the Malaysian Tri-Nation series.
But what the WICB fails to state is the date that the selectors asked for this deferral. My resignation letter is dated August 26th, the same date Roberts and Butts confirmed that they did not have any discussions with Lara. Anything could have transpired between then and September 5th unless the WICB are making out these two gentlemen to be liars.”
Barthley speaking on i95.5fm Isports Saturday programme in Trinidad, stated,” I am a link to the cricket committee, the selectors and the West Indies Cricket Board. It is very much one big link ..”
“In terms of what was stated by the West Indies Cricket Board in the release, that is fair comment, because I am a link to the cricket committee, I am not the convenor of selectors, so when I transmit information to the convenor of selectors, it is then for him to convey the information to his other selectors” said Barthley on Isports.
“There might have been some unfortunate instances with regards to Brian Lara being named. The selectors made a decision; it probably came out of a strong recommendation of the captain because of the timing of selection of the team.”
“It is probably a little unfortunate, that he (Brian Lara) is the one taking the blunt for that decision, when in fact, it was a decision coming out of the selection panel. I deal with the selection panel through the convenor of selectors (Gordon Greendige), it came out of the selectors,” added Barthley.
Questioned on the timing of the letter to the President Ken Gordon from him which was reported as September 5th, a forthright Barthley responded,” What you will notice, is that it mentions September 5th, so whereas early one , this is just confirmation to the President , re confirming for the records what transpired, so that is why September 5th is mentioned there , so is not that on that date , this is what happened then, it was just a confirmation of what happened at the time of that incident .”
“I work through the convenor of selectors so it would then be for the convenor to clear it with his other selectors….Gordon Greendige is the convenor of selectors “
Pressed further on who else he is certain would have been aware of this decision to delay the naming of the team, Barthley stated,” I know that Gordon Greendige was aware of it
.”
Let us wait the reply from Gordon Greendige, because it seems that his deafening silence is casting aspersions on the sincerity of the comments made by Michael Holding about the fact that Andy Roberts and Clyde Butts did not know about any of this.
This is all so confusing and leads one to wonder who is telling the truth and who is not.
While all of this goes on, West Indies cricket continues to suffer.
Let us mind our affairs first and forget others who seek to disrupt cricket.
