Cuba dominates, Grenada draws in Digicel Caribbean Cup

Grenada got an equalizing goal from Wendell Rennie seven minutes into the second half to make sure of a share of points as they battled to a 1-1 draw with Netherlands Antilles in the opening match of Group A action in the Digicel Caribbean Cup prelims at the Ergilio Hato Stadium in Curacao on Wedneasday.

With the teams vying for spots in the Digicel Cup Finals, scheduled for Trinidad and Tobago in January, the excitement was plentiful and the home fans got a whole lot to celebrate only 45 seconds into the match when Tyronne Maria made his way into the penalty box and neatly struck a right footer past goalkeeper Andray Charles for a 1-0 Netherlands lead.

The game progressed with both teams looking to create chances but Grenada had the stronger of the second half showing and deservedly got an equalizer when Rennie sent his left footer into the net from the edge of the box. Both teams also ended the game with ten men but stayed alive to ensure a point each after 90 minutes.

In the other game of the double header, Guyana, coached by T&T-born coach Jamaal Shabazz trounced Suriname 5-0 and will be looking for similar success when they face the Netherlands Antilles on Friday at the same venue.

The top two teams from that group will advance to the Second round scheduled for November.

In more Digicel action, Cuba showed class as they blew past Cayman Islands 7-0 at the Pedro Marrero Stadium, Havana on Wednesday to top Group E . Reinier Alcantara was their main goalscorer, wth six goals in two games thus far, adding another in the 7-0 win to finish the phase with seven to his name. Doubles by Ramon Ocafia and Ariel Martinez and two other goals by Jaime Colome and Jessey Munuz ensured Cuba reigned supreme in their first round challenge.

“ This is a good team with a blend of youth and experience,” added Cuban coach Raul Gonzalez. “They played well overall and I am pleased with the progress they are making as a unit.”
Cuba will be accompanied by Bahamas out of that group into the second round. Bahamas rallied back strongly to pip Turks and Caicos 3-2 on Wednesday. The Turks deserved credit for their gutsy display as they also scored their first win in an official international tournament when they stopped Cayman Islands 2-0 on Monday. Bahamas were too good for them however. All the goals came in the second half of an extremely competitive encounter. It was 2-2 after 72 minutes, with Dallas Nassies and Happy Hall scoring for the Bahamas and Gavin Glinton notching a double for Turks and Caicos. Then with three minutes to Nesly Jean goal broke the deadlock with a well-taken goal from the edge of the area.
