2006 YEARLING SALES ON SUNDAY 26TH NOVEMBER, 2006

2006 Yearling Sales- Sunday 26th November , 2006

By Nigel Mark and Andre E Baptiste

The 2006 Yearling Sales take place on Sunday 26th November at the Santa Rosa Park and this year’s sales represents a changing of the guard as there are no Freshly Squeezed being offered for sale.  Add to that a number of unknown but well bred and related sires and some new mares and the focus will undoubtedly be on conformation.  Having scoured the catalogue and reviewed some of the yearlings on the farm, here are my suggestions re the likely top lots this year.  It should be mentioned that there are many more attractive fillies in this year’s sale with most of the better ones appearing later in the catalogue.

Lot #3 – chestnut filly by Ministar / Concorde

This sire can produce runners as illustrated by his first runner/winner – Luca’s Gold.  The dam was a prolific grade 1 winning mare.  The knocks against this filly are that her sire is also known to produce horses with severe breathing disorders and the vendor is not known for disposing of his horses.  Don’t be surprised if this filly is withdrawn on the day of the sale.

Lot #9 – dark bay colt by Extravagance / Spellbound

It was a bit of a surprise to see the Poon Tips send their good mare Spellbound to a local stallion.  The dam, in addition to being an excellent racehorse herself, has produced a number of graded winners and placed horses most notably Godspell, who won the 2006 Midsummer Classic, Witchcraft and Takeover.  It is left to be seen the impact of having Extravagance, a good bodied son of Nosferatu, on the amounts purchasers are willing to spend on this colt.

Lot #17 – bay colt by Precise Sweep / Gin Sling

This is a beautifully bred colt whose sire is a full brother to the excellent international sire Precise End and whose dam was a listed winner and graded place racemare.  He could be anything.

Lot #61 – chestnut colt by Unbridled Optimism / Squeezed Moment

This is a very well related colt whose dam is a full sister to the likes of Carnival Messiah and Magic Moments.  His sire is a handsome son of Unbridled  and he could prove to be the salestopper under the right conditions.  It is rumoured that attempts are being made to purchase this colt privately prior to the sale so don’t be surprised if he is withdrawn on the day.

Lot #66 – dark bay colt by Unbridled Optimism / Fergy

This colt is a half brother to the useful Millionaire and has the looks of a runner.  He should set some pulses racing during his career.  One to note for certain.

Lot #67 – bay filly by Gilgamesh / Firestorm

This good looking filly is the daughter of a dam who is a full sister to Blushing Bride, Maid of Honour and Chief Commander.  The dam was a good racemare being placed in listed races such as the Oaks and Gleneagle Stakes.  Although the sire has not been an outstanding success for his owners, he has operated in the shadow of Freshly Squeezed and could be about to stake his claim now.

Lot #69 – dark bay filly by Adawar / Lady of the Moment

This is a beautifully bred filly out of a sire whose first crop this is.  Adawar was adept on both the turf and dirt and so she could be anything.  It is rumoured that this filly may already have been sold.

Lot #71 – chestnut filly by Unbridled Optimism / Antigua Bay

A good looking filly out of a mare that already produced the useful racehorse Crackshot.  The sire is a strong looking son of Unbridled and the filly has a very nice conformation.  Another one that should attract plenty of interest on the day.

Lot #76 – chestnut filly by Western Envoy / Tempest

Another well bred filly out of a wonderful racemare who has thrown useful fillies Tiger Lily, Ms. Independence and Magnificat.  The sire is unknown but it is more than likely that she will be withdrawn on the day of the sale since her vendors are known to only list their charges for the purposes of qualifying for the associated Stud Farm races.

Lot #78 – roan filly by Western Envoy / Dutchess Trembly

A very well grown filly that stands out on conformation.  Her dam never got the opportunity to show us her worth but was a winner of one of her starts before injury curtailed her career.  The sire is unknown but the filly is very attractive.

Lot #83 – bay filly by Sea Raven / Cabaret

Possibly the best of the Sea Raven’s on show on Sunday.  This is the son of Sadlers’ Wells first crop in Trinidad and this filly is well related to the useful runners Worthy Credit and Due Diligence, who won the 2002 St. James Stakes.

Lot #84 – dark bay colt by Western Envoy / Sizzling

Another potential salestopper based on the dam who has thrown numerous winners in the form of Cornerstone and Arts and Lovers.

Lot #88 – bay filly by Gilgamesh / Dreams of Glory

A half sister to the useful Fame and Glory, this filly should attract some interest on the day.

Lot #91 – dark bay colt by Storm Report / Mindset

Storm Report has shown that he can produce runners through his sons Tail of the Storm and No Limit.  Mindset has already produced So Unique and Beautiful Mind – two very useful racehorses.  He should be interesting.
