RUMOR has it..... that in September
......one of the biggest construction projects ever to be undertaken by a single firm will start in the Caribbean.
GL Events, a firm based in Lyon, France, will begin its work on the temporary seating for the 12 venues in nine territories for the 2007 International Cricket Council's World Cup (CWC). (FEARLESS asks why France?)
The project will start with the building of the new 16 000-seat grandstand on the eastern side of Kensington Oval and then move to the other venues. Overall GL Events will be installing over 75 000 seats and will be putting in other temporary facilities. ( FEARLESS asks how will we fill these after?)
Caribbean companies which applied last December to supply equipment and services under the central procurement process will now deal directly with GL Events and work to be selected as secondary overlay suppliers.
The firm will now accept tenders from those companies which have been pre-qualified. The successful companies will be contracted as secondary suppliers to GL Events. (FEARLESS just says Hmnn......)
"It's fantastic. It's very complex with nine different countries and already it's a massive achievement to be able to get the event running at this pace," said Xavier Becker. (FEARLESS asks Did we not learn about dealing with Beckers?)
"We are delighted to be working in the West Indies and bringing our expertise to the region for such an important event as the Cricket World Cup. (FEARLESS says I bet they are!)
"This is big for the West Indies and it's also big for us. We are very impressed by the hard work of the local organising committees and the facility officers we have seen so far," he said. (FEARLESS wonders where they went)
Last week, the developers of the nine local organising committees have been meeting with officials from GL Events to plan the way to execute the projects. (FEARLESS cannot believe that they are still planning when will execution start?)
"Part of our work will include giving an education to the people we work with. We want to allow the people of the West Indies to not only work, but to learn so they will have a chance to carry on other projects in the future." (FEARLESS finds that so SWEET.....not)
The CWC will run from March 5 to 28. Pre-tournament matches run from March 5 to 9 and will be played at the 3Ws Oval, the Brian Lara Stadium, Trinidad; the Greenfield Stadium, Trelawney in Jamaica; and Arnos Vale, St Vincent.
The opening round will be played from March 13 to March 25. Group A will be played at the New Warner Park, St Kitts; Group B at Queen's Park Oval, Trinidad; Group C at Beausejour, St Lucia; and Group D at Sabina Park, Jamaica.
The Super 8 matches have been divided into two segments. From March 27 to April 9, matches will be at the Viv Richards Stadium, Antigua, and the Providence Stadium, Guyana. The other segment will be at Kensington Oval and Queen's Park, Grenada Oval from April 10 to 21.
The semis will be at Sabina Park on April 24 and Beausejour on April 25."
