No play for Windies on rainy Monday

Windies upbeat despite wash out

There was no play for the West Indies on Monday as the final day of their three-day match against Essex County Club was washed out. There was steady rain on Monday morning and the outfield was too wet for play.

Scores in the match: Essex 263 and 175-3, West Indies 146.

West Indies Head Coach John Dyson said the players remained in good spirits despite the wash out and they will be looking to forward to the next first-class match -- a four-day fixture against the England Lions at the County Ground in Derbyshire starting on Thursday.

“Ideally we would have liked another hit (second innings) but we can’t control the weather. We just have to move on to the next match at Derby and make the most of that opportunity,” Dyson said.

“In this game we did not bat very well and the guys know that. The one exception was Shiv, and he will always be Shiv … he just bats and bats and that will always be his style. We are not down at all. We know what we have to do and we are confident of doing well.”

On Sunday, Chanderpaul made a resolute 66 not out off 107 balls. It was the 87th half-century of his first-class career to go alongside 48 centuries.

“The bowlers have all bowled some good spells and it is a matter of being consistent. The guys will be looking to tune-up with the prospect of playing in the Test matches so we will be expecting some good performances in Derby.”

In between the rain, the Windies players took the opportunity to do gym work, do video analysis and also sign autographs for fans at the ground.

The match against the England Lions will be the final warm-up match before the two-match Test Series against England. The 1st Test will be at Lord’s on May 6-10. The 2nd Test will be at Riverside Ground at Chester-le-Street, starting May 14.
