TTFF News - Warner : Win over Haiti significant in many ways

Warner : Win over Haiti significant in many ways

Issued on May 29, 2007

FIFA Vice President Jack Warner has offered congratulations to the current members of the Trinidad and Tobago Senior team following their 1-0 victory over Haiti in the opening day of the Digicel Shield.

T&T, minus several of its regular members who wore the national shirt at Germany 2006, held its own to come away with the win on Monday and set up a final with Mexico’s Pan American team on Wednesday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

In a letter to head coach Wim Rijsbergen and manager Sam Phillip on Tuesday from Switzerland, Warner stated “This is one of those occasions where, in my various football capacities,  I take the greatest pleasure in congratulating the senior national team on their win vs Haiti yesterday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on the occasion of the mini tournament in celebration of Digicel’s first anniversary as a telecommunications service provider in Trinidad and Tobago .  The victory is significant for several reasons, none of which will be enunciated at this time.  Suffice it to say, from all reports, the guys, under the fine leadership of young Densill Theobold did an excellent job in their victory over the other Caribbean powerhouse Haiti .

“Please extend my congratulations to all as we look forward to victory over Mexico in their next match and then on to participation in the Gold Cup where I have no doubt they will continue to shine,” added the TTFF Special Advisor.

“All my colleagues at the FIFA join with me in extending congratulations to you, your staff and the guys and do urge all of you to keep the faith for the future of football in Trinidad & Tobago continues to be bright indeed in spite of the few dark spots which may emerge from time to time.”

Warner had just witnessed the inauguration of the Home of FIFA headquarters with festivities in the presence of 1,300 association delegates and many invited guests from the worlds of sport, culture, politics and business.

TTFF News - After match comments ... Squad cut for Olympic screening.. T&T to face Guyana, Antilles and Suriname

Rijsbergen to mix it up in build up to Gold Cup – May 29,2007

National Senior team head coach Wim Rijsbergen says he will possibly change his starting team for Wednesdays Digicel Shield final against Mexico’s Pan American team as he seeks to give his 22 players  a “fair” chance in the build up to the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Rijsbergen relayed this following T&T’s 1-0 win over Haiti at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Monday night. The win was witnessed by several of the players currently excluded from the Gold Cup team because of an ongoing impasse with the Federation. The likes of Brent Sancho, Cornell Glen, Jason Scotland, Carlos Edwards, Stern John, Marvin Andrews, Dennis Lawrence and Kelvin Jack were all present.

“If you saw the last part we played for the Digicel Cup an the team today it was  a completely  different team. We had eight different  guys on the field for starting line up today  and for the next game we have some guys we will try before going to Honduras and the Gold Cup,” Rijsbergen said after the match

“On the other hand the group we have now want to win the next game of course and we don’t have a lot of time to prepare this team but the guys are in good spirits and as you  saw today they tried very hard. Of course there is also room for improvement, but I was satisfied with the performance and I told the guys go as far as they can.”

He was impressed by the performance of his second half substitutes in particular Andre Toussaint and Errol McFarlane.

“We have very good subs and they finished the game. It was a good goal by Toussaint … Mcfarlane came in and did a good job. We see all the guys ready to be working to be in the starting line up for the Gold Cup and that’s what we are here for.”

And he wasn’t surprised that a T&T team considered second string for obvious reasons could pull off a win over the Haitians.

“I have been working with the guys everyday and if you know Haiti they are a tough opponent …they are a physical and well prepared team, I was happy. We did a lot of work in a couple days and some of these guys are still not hundred percent. They are working very hard and we try to keep high pace in passing, I was satisfied with the performance even though we did make some mistakes

Maybe I will use some other guys to start  the next game just to give everybody a fair chance. I explained to the boys that we are looking for the best team,” added Rijsbergen who reminded everyone that the current Digicel Shield and even the Gold Cup was still just part of the bigger picture which is getting a team in tune for the 2010 World Cup qualification bid.

T&T takes on Guatemala, El Salvador and United States in the Gold Cup from June 6-24.

Screening sessions continue on Thursday for Olympic team

Coach Jan Van Deinsen and assistant Michael McComie have made another cut to the squad of players training towards selection on the National Olympic team for qualifiers towards the 2008 Olympic Games.

The team will go into CFU preliminary round qualifying action from August 31 in Suriname. The four-nation group includes the host as well as Guyana and Netherlands Antilles. The top team from the round-robin phase will progress to the CFU Final round.

The team will have another screening session from 9am on Thursday at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

CFU News - STATEMENT BY MEMBERS OF CONCACAF IN RESPONSE TO MCBETH'S REMARKS

CONCACAF STATEMENT

NEW YORK (Monday, 28 May 2007) - CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) has issued the following statement today:

Statement

By Members of CONCACAF

28 May 2007

Re: Recent Media Articles by John McBeth, British Vice-President of FIFA

_____________________________________________________________________________________

The President, Executive and Members of CONCACAF are genuinely disturbed and disappointed to hear of recent media reports quoting extensively the remarks of John McBeth in relation to his appointment as British Vice-President of FIFA.

The Members of CONCACAF stand united in their views that the statements of Mr. McBeth are both malicious and defamatory. Further, it is quite clear from his sensational phrases, unsubstantiated claims and pure bigotry that Mr. McBeth sought to intentionally damage the good reputation of FIFA, its President Mr. Sepp Blatter, President of CONCACAF and FIFA Vice-President Mr. Jack Warner, the African nations and the Caribbean nations.

Mr. McBeth was elected by the British nations to represent them on the FIFA Executive. His service on the Executive was for the purpose of promoting the game of football at the highest level and in all regions of the world. Instead, Mr. McBeth has chosen to embarrass those British nations, all of whom have a very productive and genuine relationship with the nations of CONCACAF. Further, he has undermined himself in the eyes of the family of football. His wide-ranging, deplorable and blatant false statements and opinions demonstrate that he took a calculated risk in insulting and defaming various entities and organizations in the world of football.

CONCACAF recognizes the actions taken earlier today by FIFA to refer the matter to the Ethics Committee. This is a necessary step in order for the matter to be clarified and properly dealt with.

However, the Executive and Members of CONCACAF again stand united in stating that Mr. McBeth is not worthy of representing the British nations at FIFA, neither is he worthy of taking a seat on the FIFA Executive. We call upon the British nations to revoke immediately the appointment of Mr. McBeth.

Further, we submit that if Mr. McBeth has any honour or integrity then he should do the honourable thing and resign his position as the nominated British Vice-President of FIFA.

The Members of CONCACAF call upon him to so resign.

New Look Warriors go for good showing versus Haiti … Jemmot out with injury

Issued by Shaun Fuentes, TTFF Media Officer, May 27, 2007

Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior footballers, already minus several of its 2006 World Cup players will now have to go into the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup without the services of midfielder Kerwyn Jemmot.

The Superstar Rangers player suffered a hamstring strain in Friday night’s T&T Pro Bowl Final and has been ruled out of the competition following further checks by team doctor Terrence Babwah. Jemmot remained with the team at the Crowne Plaza but will not take part in this week’s Digicel Shield and will not make the trip to Honduras on Friday for a warm up international. The team heads over to Los Angeles following the game with Honduras to begin its Gold Cup campaign.

Head Coach Wim Rijsbergen now has a 22-player roster preparing for the Gold Cup which has been strengthened by the addition of Dutch-based forward Darryl Roberts.

The 22-year-old striker is coming off his professional stint with Sparta Rotterdam and though sitting out the team’s last couple matches because of a leg injury, he is still in high spirits over his return to the national team since the Digicel Cup and friendly matches against Panama and Costa Rica.

“It’s always a good feeling to return to a national team,” Roberts told TTFF Media. “I was able to make my debut in the Digicel Cup and then having gone to Holland and gotten more exposure I believe more in myself as a player now and I think I can only get better by being confident and working hard at the same time.

“I know there has been a lot of talk over the situation with the World Cup players and that’s disappointing yes but I think the current group of players are determined to do well and hopefully we can get things together and pull off some good performances. At the end of the day I think everyone wants to do their best whether it’s with or without the players that went to the World Cup. It’s not going to be easy but we still have to prepare well and give it out best shot,” added the ex-Fatima College marksman.

T&T tackles Haiti from 7pm while in the earlier game from 5pm St Vincent and the Grenadines meet Mexico’s Pan American team which was scheduled to arrive here on Sunday night.

Haitian captain Richard Bruny Pierre said his team was hoping to use the T&T match to finalize its preparations for the Gold Cup matches against Costa Rica, Canada and Guadeloupe.

“We have played Trinidad before and we know the games are always played with a lot in it. This is a good training game for us because both of us want to do well in the Gold Cup and we need to prepare well. We won over Trinidad in the Digicel Cup but it’s still good to play them again tomorrow,” Pierre said.

Haiti met Chile in a friendly international in Port-au-Prince last Wednesday and held the South Americans preparing for the Copa America to a 0-0 draw. The Haitians carried it’s unbeaten streak to five matches in the process.

The youngest member of the current team, 20-year-old Keon Daniel is seeing the chance to go to the Gold Cup as a major stepping stone. He still recalls of every moment of his experience at the “Theatre of Dreams” while training with Manchester United in 2005. And now the chance to don a national shirt is a moment he is anxiously awaiting.

“As a young player coming up I always wanted to make the team. I am so glad for this call up. I have been encouraged to work harder and that’s exactly what I’m doing. This is a different level,” Daniel said.

“The experience at Man U was great one because it took me out into the world of football. Bertille St Clair made the arrangements and I had two weeks working in the Academy and I was able experience the works. Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney were at the club from that time as well. That exposure showed me how fast the game is and it taught me what is needed to really make it on the big stage. I think I have worked on my aggression since then and hopefully I can get a chance to show some of it on a stage with the national team,” added the former T&T Under 20 and current Petrotrin player.

T&T Squad:
Jan Michael Williams, Marvin Phillip, Daurance Williams, Keyeno Thomas, Seon Power, Dwayne Jack, Romauld Aguillera, Nicholson Thomas, Densill Theobald (Captain), Kerry Baptiste, Christian Baptiste, Keon Daniel, Silvio Spann, Andre Toussaint, Andrei Pacheco, Kendall Jagdeosingh, Trent Noel, Anthony Noreiga, Glenton Wolfe, Gary Glasgow, Darryl Roberts and Errol McFarlane.

TTFF News - Scotland signs with Swansea

Scotland signs new deal with Swansea, May 25, 2007

Striker Jason Scotland has agreed to a two year deal with English League One club Swansea City.

Currently awaiting a new work permit to make the move over to England, Scotland agreed to the deal after interest from other clubs such as Birmingham City, Hearts, Dundee United, Southend and of late Hibernian.

The Welsh based club also includes former T&T English-born defender Kevin Austin and Dennis Lawrence.

“I want to say thanks to St Johnstone for showing faith in me and allowing me to part of their plans for the last couple season,” Scotland told TTFF Media. “Without playing there I may not have this chance to move to England. I have always wanted to play in England and now hopefully I can make good use of this opportunity. The manager felt that I could add something to the club and I am looking forward to continuing the kind of form I had in Scotland last season. There will be some kind of change in the game itself but I think I can make that transition and just continue working hard and hopefully bring a lot of goals for Swansea,” he added.

Swansea manager Roberto Martinez was delighted to announce the League One club's first new signing since the end of the season.

"I'm not surprised that there has been a lot of interest in Jason from a number of clubs, especially as he was due to become a free agent in August," Martinez told the club website.

"Goal-scorers are the most precious commodity in football and I believe we've persuaded a quality striker to join us. Jason Scotland is an exciting player who always entertains and attracts the crowds - and players like that are a rare breed.

"He is a striker with all-round ability which will enable him to play in a number of roles that gives us different options.

"Jason has a magic touch and can make something happen out of nothing.Jason seems a very reliable character and if he's anything like Dennis he will be disciplined and a model pro. I'm really excited about working with him," Martinez added.

TTFF News - U17s start back with strength training

Photos shows team in training on Wednesday.

U17s start back with strength training
Issued by Shaun Fuentes, TTFF Media Officer, May 24, 2007

Trinidad and Tobago’s National Under 17 footballers resumed training for the first time on Wednesday after its qualification for the 2007 FIFA Under 17 World Championship which starts in Korea in August.

The team, under coach Anton Corneal, booked its place in the World Finals with a 1-0 victory over Jamaica in Kingston earlier this month but after returning home was given some time off before regrouping at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

They will go into a strength training programme for the next couple weeks before beginning a slate of training matches both locally and abroad. Corneal said plans for international warm up encounters were still being outlined.

“We will have the players in a strength programme in the first instance before starting the technical preparations again. We are aware of the type of opposition we will face in the group phase and that will no obviously say a lot in terms of how we prepare over the next few weeks leading up to the opening game against Ghana,” Corneal told TTFF Media.

“We will work strictly according to plan because that’s exactly what we did in the build up towards the qualifying round and to come and win two final games is not an easy task to accomplish. We know there’s a difference playing in a World Finals now but we will ensure that we remain discipline in our approach and not get carried away in the process,” he added.

Thursday’s session was based around strength training with the use of medicine balls. Meantime, a couple of the members were also excused due to being engaged in CXC O’Level Examinations.

The team, before taking on any international opposition, is expected to face a Pro League Under 17 All Star team and then also a Tobago Under 20 team.

ICC PRESIDENT CRITICALLY ILL

Percy Sonn, the president of the ICC, is critically ill in an intensive care unit in Cape Town, according to Cricket South Africa.

His PA, George Hector, told Cricinfo that Sonn had suffered complications after being admitted to the Durbanville clinic in Cape Town on Monday to undergo a minor colon operation. The appointment, Hector added, had been scheduled several months prior to the recent World Cup in the Caribbean.

Sonn, 57, the former president of the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCB), succeeded Ehsan Mani at the helm of the ICC in June 2006, and immediately announced his intentions to be a "hands-off" president. This declaration was borne out by his low profile during the World Cup; after delivering his speech at the opening ceremony in Jamaica, he returned to South Africa for several weeks of the 47-day tournament, although that decision may have been attributable to his ill-health.

"This news is extremely upsetting for everyone who knows Percy," Brian Murgatroyd, the ICC's spokesman, told Cricinfo. "Everyone was with him at the World Cup, where he was his usual jolly self, and so to hear this less than a month later is very troubling.

"Percy has given virtually his whole life to cricket," added Murgatroyd. "He started out in administration at his local club in Belville [in Cape Town] because he was virtually the only person at the club who could read and write. He played a major part in the integration of the South African game after apartheid, and was president of the UCB throughout a tumultuous decade. All our thoughts are with his family and wife Sandra at this difficult time."

Sonn's career in cricket administration has been as controversial as it has been long. In January 2002, as president of the UCB, he caused a public rumpus by overruling the selection of Jacques Rudolph for the New Year Test against Australia, opting instead for Rudolph's black room-mate, Justin Ontong. But his most infamous behaviour came at Paarl during the 2003 World Cup, when he drank himself into such a state of inebriation during Holland's match against India that he was reported to have "almost fallen out of his trousers".

TTFF News - Qualifying for Korea eases Barber's World Cup tabanca

Qualifying for Korea eases Barber’s World Cup ‘tabanca’

Issued by Shaun Fuentes, TTFF Media Officer, May 21, 2007

Former national midfielder Hutson Charles is finally waking up these days without much of a World Cup “tabanca”.

And there’s one reason for that really. And no it’s not the success of World Cup qualification by the Soca Warriors in 2006. It’s all because of the recent achievement made by the National Under 17 team for which Charles was assistant coach. The Junior Soca Warriors had close to two and a half years together before going into the CONCACAF Final round of qualification and subsequently booking its place in the 2007 FIFA Under 17 World Championship.

Charles, a former Defence Force player, and like most Trinbagonians, still reflect sadly on the country’s last match failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in 1990. A fateful 1-0 loss to the United States ended those dreams but Charles, a valuable member of that team, declared that qualifying for Korea has laid his ghosts of 1989 to rest.

“As a player back then the dream and aspirations were to play at the highest level which was the World Cup. And since not qualifying after coming so close, it left a big hole in my future... my career. We have seen now what a going to a World Cup can do for a nation and for players and as individuals as well. And when we didn’t qualify in ’89 with all those high hopes it was almost like seeing a lot of things just go down the drain,” Charles told TTFF Media.

“But now I can tell you I have new life so to say. Failure to get to Italy was a huge disappointment and although what the Soca Warriors did last year eased a bit of the pain, personally it didn’t take care of everything. I was happy yes but not being part of it meant that there was something missing. And now being part of this effort with the Under 17s qualifying for a World Cup has proven to be a huge stress reliever for me. It will be difficult for people to really understand because of the situations myself and most of the other players from ’89 had to go through with that disappointment. We were all happy when the team made to Germany and now for me personally, qualifying for Korea with these youths is like my qualification for a World Cup,” Charles said.

“I feel tremendously as ease now.”

He recalled his days as an Under 17 player for T&T before graduating to the National Under 19 team that won the Caribbean Football Union Championship in 1984 under head coach Vernon Bain and then moving up under Hannibal Najjar to the Olympic team and then subsequently the Senior Team during that 80s era.

“That was  a really good period for us. I remember playing with guys like Clint Marcelle, Russell Sutton and a lot of other players from Barataria Ball Players as well. We won the Under 19 CFU Championship in ’84 under Vernon Bain. Russell (Latapy) wasn’t on that team because they felt he was too young. I personally felt he could have made it though. He later got his chance after I moved up to the Olympic team and that is when guys like Dwight, Leonson Lewis and Shaka and some of the others came into the ranks,” recalled Charles, affectionately known as “Barber” by all around him.

“Working with these Under 17 youngsters has been a real pleasure. I saw them from little boys make that transition into youths who are still maturing. I was with them since the early days when Ken Elie had them and then Anton Corneal took over to continue the tremendous job.”

Charles also mentioned the likes of those who were instrumental in him making the changeover from player to coach.

“I must give kudos to Gally Cummings, Richard Braithwaite who helped me get involved in the courses, Kenny Joseph, Lincoln Phillips, Ken Elie and Anton Corneal. These are all people with good knowledge. Of course Jack Warner has always had high hopes for me. I remember him saying this at one of the coaching closing ceremonies. Richard Groden, Sam Phillip are guys who would have my back and I am thankful for that,” added Charles who has completed the CFU Level One coaching course, the FA coaching license course at the Dr Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence as well as another FA course in Wales.

ISPORTS COMMENTARY FOR TUESDAY 15TH MAY, 2007

COACH WIM  SEEKS PAYMENT FOR HIS STAFF AND TO PICK THE BEST TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

=====================================================

How many of us will work for free.?

Worse, how many of us, will work without any remuneration for nearly three (3) months.

National Football Coach Wim Rijsbergen is in such a position at the moment.  He revealed all of this on I-Sports Saturday this weekend.

Also, it was disclosed on the same programme that the local members of the National Football Team training division, have not been paid for the last seven months.

This is all disrespectful and totally unfair, and it speaks volumes for the integrity of the Football Federation, the Government and Corporate Trinidad and Tobago.

Then there is the question of the so called black listed players.

If you make promises, you should keep them at all times.

Whatever the Government gave the players and Team Officials has nothing to do with commitments made.

Football is a professional sport, and the people involved in the Sport must be professional in their  behaviour.

The Professionalism of Coach Wim is now clear, his mind is made up, and he spoke of the team spirit among the Under 17.He also spoke of the need to improve the level of coaching in the Country, which we all know is time.

His praise for Anton Corneal is also another indication, that he is looking towards the future.

I am afraid, though that this interview confirmed what we already knew that Oliver Camps is a figurehead, as it seems ,Richard Groden and Jack Warner control football, we should  though be careful because we could soon lose a good man in Coach Wim, if we are not careful .

The Government also need to speak out honestly on this issue, and let us know if they held back the payments because of doubts over the salaried contracts presented to them.

This is Andre Errol Baptiste saying , have no fear , the Fearless One is here

TTFF News - Going Korea with U17 goalie Glenroy Samuel - Profile

“My mother sells pies to help out and it was always hard for her. Now I am just happy I was able to play a part in helping the country reach a World Cup and I hope I can make things better for my family and be an inspiration”.

That’s the first response that comes from National Under 17 goalkeeper Glenroy Samuel when asked about his background and how he felt about being part of the Trinidad and Tobago team that qualified earlier this month  for the 2007 FIFA Under 17 World Championship.

Born and grown up in Block 22, Laventille, Glenroy was a top guard  in the T&T goal in all of its matches in the recent final CONCACAF qualifying round in Jamaica but his two most significant showings came in the 2-1 win over Canada and the 1-0 win over Jamaica which booked T&T’s spot in Korea.

A former student of Belmont Junior Secondary, the 16-year-old Samuel now attends San Juan Senior Secondary and is a member of the CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh football club. He hopes to one day play in the Italian League and his favourite team is AC Milan.

Now residing in San Juan, he knows all too well what it means to come from almost nothing to being the number one youth goalkeeper in T&T. A couple years back, he missed out on making the National Under 15 team because of having missed training sessions due to Church calls, following the Pentecostal faith. But persistence and tireless work with goalkeeper coach Ross Russell pushed Samuel to the starting team in a friendly against Mexico and then all four qualifying matches in Jamaica.

“I was left out of the team for the Under 15s because I missed some training with Church but I wanted the spot real bad so I worked really hard after that. I have a mad mind and I don’t give up. I know I was better than that and I just kept on pushing myself.I know sometimes it was hard for Jesse (Fullerton) but worked it out,” said Samuel who also favours his chances in a 400 metres race.

He added that Russell, Shaka Hislop ,Kelvin Jack and Jan Michael Williams have been the inspiring figures for him.

“Ross always working me real hard and I am thankful for that. I think my reflexes are one of my strengths but I need to talk more in the game.

“All in all I wanted to be a goalkeeper because I’m a wild man… I like to dive,” Samuel laughed. “But seriously, I like to think of myself as the main man to protect things for the team. They have to come through me last to beat my team.”

Standing at 5ft 9 inches, he praised Corneal and the staff of the Under 17 team along with his mother Donna for guiding him. He has his sights on playing professionally and lining up for the Trinidad and Tobago Senior Team.

“If you ask me who inspired me I would say the whole coaching staff and my mother Donna. She has to sell pies too to help out and I said I feel good that I can maybe help her out now. It’s good when youths can help out too,” he ended. In the meantime, he will take up his position and await the outcome of Thursday’s draw in Seoul, promising not to get too mad over it.

“We started this a few years ago but it didn’t come last couple years because of the hectic schedules we had with the World Cup and other things and now we want to bring it back because it was one of Mickey’s dreams to play in a World Cup. The Women’s Senior team also recently returned home from Alabama where it faced the USA Under 21 team and the Chinese Women’s team in exhibition matches and despite losing both games were able to come away with invaluable experience. Marlon Charles is currently the coach of the T&T Women’s Senior Team.

TTFF News - Digicel Shield Football tournament takes place in Trinidad May 28-30

Digicel Shield comes off month end… request goes out to Yorke

Issued May 14, 2007

Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior footballers will warm up for this summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup international with two international matches at the Hasely Crawford Stadium later this month as Digicel announced their staging of the inaugural Digicel Shield.

Three international teams, the senior teams of fellow Gold Cup participants Cuba and Haiti and the National Olympic team of Mexico will contest the semi-finals at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on May 28. This contest is also being hosted by Digicel as part of their one-year anniversary in T&T, as announced at the launch on Monday at the Crowne Plaza,Port of Spain.

In the opening game the Mexicans will tackle Cuba from 5pm and then the “Soca Warriors” will battle Haiti in a repeat of the Digicel Cup final. The losers will meet in the third place playoff  at 5pm on May 30 at the same venue with the other two teams contesting the final from 7pm.

CONCACAF President Jack Warner also announced  that at the weekend CONCACAF Congress in Toronto it was agreed that T&T’s World Cup captain Dwight Yorke will be honoured at the upcoming Gold Cup and as such he is expected to join the senior team for the tournament. Warner added that an invitation went out from him to Yorke on Sunday, requesting his services for the Digicel Shield and the Gold Cup.

Warner added that the Digicel Shield gives competing countries some much needed international experience.

“I want to compliment Digicel because once again that have responded to the call. They are going the distance in furthering the development of football and the support they have shown throughout the last two years have been countless. Digicel have funded the development of youth football throughout the Caribbean and have always been in there whenever I have had to make a request for support to ensure football is progressed in the Caribbean,” Warner added.

Digicel CEO Kevin White also agreed to assist Warner in the payment of salaries to the National coaches for the past two months.

“After the successful series of Digicel International matches held during the FIFA window in March, the Digicel shield offers further opportunity for national teams for both regions to ensure they are successfully prepared to represent their region as well as possible,” White stated.

T&T head coach Wim Rijsbergen, while listening to Warner’s assurance that the T&T team will be best supported as possible, even if without some of its World Cup players, did extend gratitude for the upcoming matches which includes a friendly international away to Honduras prior to the team’s arrival in the USA for the Gold Cup. But he made it known that he still would be happier man if he has the best players at his disposal.

“The Digicel shield is the perfect warm up for us before the hugely important Gold Cup in June and the whole team is looking forward to putting in a first class performance on home turf. Digicel’s support of the Soca Warriors has been phenomenal over the last year with the Digicel Caribbean Cup and now the Digicel Shield,” Rijsbergen added.

Admission for both days of action will be $100 (covered), $50 (uncovered) and $20 in uncovered for  kids. Digicel will have further promotional events over the coming days leading up to the matches.

TTFF Releases - T&T Qualifies for 2007 FIFA U17 World Championship

Korea here comes T&T!

Issued by Shaun Fuentes, TTFF Media Officer in Kingston, May 7, 2007

“We Going Korea! We Going Korea!”

That line was the popular one among members of the Trinidad and Tobago National Under 17 team at around 10 pm T&T Time on Sunday as the junior “Soca Warriors” booked to ensure participation in a football World Cup for the second time in less than a year for the twin-island Republic.

And 16-year-old Kevin Molino, hailing from Carenage will have his name go down in the record books alongside Dennis Lawrence as the one with the distinction of scoring the goal which pushed T&T through to the World Finals.

His 13th minute item was enough to hold off a desperate Jamaican outfit by a 1-0 margin and join fellow Concacaf nations Haiti, Honduras, Costa Rica and United States at the FIFA Under World Championship which kicks off in Korea on August 18 and runs until September 9.

Going into Sunday’s encounter, a draw would have pushed T&T through to the World Championship based on their head to head results, having won 2-1 over Canada which was on four points. But head coach Anton Corneal wanted a win and his players were made to think that only a win would see them through. They were instructed to stay discipline against the more powerfully built and forceful Jamaicans. They were told that once they played a clever tactical game with composure and determination that chances would come and clinical finishing would determine their fate. The rest is history.

From the kick off, Jamaica showed that they meant business with an effort from the left going wide of the upright but T&T soon settled and took the game to the “Reggae Boyz”.

Stephen Knox was not afraid to run at the Jamaican defence and pushed through to the touchline before being bundled over with the ball running out for a goal kick.

On eight minutes T&T made their first serious attempt at goal when left sided workhorse Akeem Adams floated one into the box and Knox nodded on for Robert Primus but he couldn’t keep his header down.

A minute later Jamaica responded, this time, Noel Mais shot wide from well inside the 18-yard box.

Jamaica were trying to make inroads from either sides of the pitch and opted for the deep service approach. McKauly Tulloch and Dever Orgill had further chances for them

But Molino, comingin for Daneil Cyrus and making his first start of the tournament, had other ideas. The little man, wearing the number 19 shirt and easily one of the smallest players on the field, thrilled the fans and troubled the Jamaican players with his deft touch and willingness to travel with the ball at his feet. Constant step overs and an almost unorthodox way of weaving his way between players made up Molino’s game. “Latapy come back again” was the clear choice of words being heard in the Jamaican accent from a few in the covered stands.

The CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh player rested the hurt on the “Reggae Boyz” and booked T&T’s passage to Korea in the process when he collected on the right and fluently moved goalwards, going between the two centre halves before clinically burying a right footer into the far corner of the net. Just like that and just as Corneal had ordered, T&T were up 1-0 and Korea looked closer.

As anticipated, the hosts didn’t back down. Shortly after Kabari Palmer picked up on a bad clearance and tried his luck from 35 yards out but to no avail.

From then on T&T goalkeeper Glenroy Samuel’s night of bravery began between the uprights. He would go on to make vital interceptions and stops to easily walk away with the “Man of the Match” award.

T&T continued to play though before the interval took both teams to the dressing rooms. Molino was busy on both sides even finding himself deep in his team’s half, going for balls and taking it forward. While Knox and Leston Paul would have been observed previously, the Jamaicans knew little or nothing of Molino and he was having a time.

Five minutes before the break, one came over from the right but Adams skied over bar as he rushed in on the far post.

For a period, the home fans, maybe about 5,000 of them in the Stadium, would go silent as T&T stifled their team on the pitch. To their credit too, they never once showed any signs of troubling the T&T team members nor their section of 60 odd fans positioned just above the players tunnel.

In the 43rd minute, Molino drifted down the left, played inside for Paul who in turn slipped to his right for Knox inside the box but even as he rounded goalie Oneil Wilson, his hurried shot went over an unprotected goal. A goal there probably would have taken the sting out of the hosts but they continued to press and out muscle T&T.

Almost on the stroke of half time though, Molino again caused them problems as he played inside for Knox but as quick ball runner moved away from the goalie, he pushed too much and had his tight angled attempt cleared by a defender.

One could sense that the Jamaicans would throw everything forward in search of the equalizer in the second half and that was exactly what transpired. T&T had to dig deep in defense but skipper Ryan O’Neil, workhorse Jean Luc Rochford and Robert Primus fought like “Warriors” at the back. And Samuel left his best performance of the series for the final bout. His showing was comparable to Floyd Mayweather’s gutsy display in the ring the previous night, his presence in goal growing stronger stronger as the battle ticked over. Early in the second half he had to recover quickly to stop a point blank effort by Mais after punching the initial cross and falling to the ground. Coach David Hunte introduced Akeen Brown and Andre Steele into the attack and though the fresh legs threatened T&T for a short period, it was not enough to break them. Down the stretch Chad De Freitas and Cyrus came on for T&T while Aubrey David had replaced injured defender Sheldon Bateau on 64 minutes.

As Jamaica forced their way in and around the T&T penalty area, the frightening shout of “Gooooallll” from the fans turned into jeers after Dever Orgill’s strike was ruled offside in the 65th minute.

Molino almost got a second goal 12 minutes from time when his shot was stopped by the ‘keeper after T&T tried to capitalize on a quick break. By then Jamaica were barely trying to spoil T&T’s eventual party but when the sounds of Machel Montano’s “We reach the stage… we warming up” blasted from the music boxes, it was a clear signal to Seoul that the “Soca Warriors” would be arriving in August.

T&T’s newest football sensations arrives home tonight

Issued by Shaun Fuentes, Media Officer in Kingston, May 7, 2007

Caribbean Airlines will take newest squad of football sensations back to Trinidad and Tobago on Monday and may well be advised to set up route to Korea following this country’s qualification for the 2007 FIFA Under 17 World Championship.

Scenes of high emotion and jubilation took over the field and the T&T dressing room at the National Stadium, Kingston on Sunday night as T&T’s National Under 17 footballers celebrated their 1-0 win over Jamaica to seal up the third spot from the group towards the Championship. It meant that T&T made it through to the World Championship, first time as qualifiers, joining 23 other countries including those such as Japan, hosts Korea, Korea DPR, Tajikistan, Syria, Nigeria,Togo, Ghana and Syria, Haiti and Honduras, Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Argentina and New Zealand among others at the Championships

Coach Anton Corneal and his junior “Soca Warriors” sang, pranced and hugged anyone in sight as the sounds of Soca blared from the music speakers and the sight of Jamaican colours quickly disappeared from the stands.

Corneal had used the track “Lion” by T&T songster Kees Diffenthaller from Kes the Band to get his players battle ready. The song, with the words “I am a lion… I am a fighter” is about preparing one for the many challenges in life, finding strength within one’s heart, holding on to dreams even though it seems out of reach and inspite of the many that would always try to bring down a brother. That in a nutshell could sum up the display from this team. From regular captain Jesse Fullerton being forced to the bench for all four games and his replacement Glenroy Samuel being a giant in goal and the tale of little Kevin Molino’s winning reward for Corneal’s decision to start him for the first time in such a critical affair; the little recognition from fans and media going into the tournament to the numerous congratulatory messages and calls from local and international media which followed on Sunday night into the early hours of Monday morning relates to it all.

“This is one of the few teams that came through a pilot project. Two years ago we got this in place, Some people just didn’t understand long term planning and we had our obstacles. I think this team deserves every bit of its success and the players did it at times against the odds even with the critics and that’s only normal to have the critics. It seems that is part of our society,” Corneal told TTFF Media moments after the win.

“When I look at what Brian Lara had to go through, I ask who am I?”

“I hope now this can open the eyes. It’s not about Anton Corneal but instead it’s about realizing that if the proper structure is put in place at least we will be put in a position to be successful and to qualify for more World Cups,” Corneal continued.

He also mentioned the vision and efforts of TTFF Special Advisor Jack Warner and the Federation. Warner had initiated the setting up of National Under 15 team in October 2004.

“His vision was also clear and that gave me a lot of support. Warner, Groden…. They gave us a lot of support and it’s easier when you have that support, when they stick with you through it. These players have proven them right and this is not the end all. We have to continue this trend by having long term preparations.

“Working with a team for a long time is so helpful. I knew we would be able to break teams once we played… I knew we would create chances. We have to take the talent and work with it for a long time or else we would never realize the full potential in our football.”

The former National player, also assistant coach for the T&T Senior team also credited his staff for their tireless efforts not just at matches but also during the screening sessions throughout country which brought players to the team from Mayaro, Point Fortin, La Brea, Cascade, Couva, San Juan, Biche, Morvant, Arima, Petit Valley, Mount Hope,Glencoe, Carenage, Port of Spain and Plymouth in Tobago. He added that the input from Dutchman Wim Rijsbergen was invaluable and appreciated the assistance of technical director Lincoln Phillips.

Hard work was the order of everyday. Just ask Molino.

“I got the chance and I know I had to put in my hardest bit of work today. This was the game to score in. I watched the big players make it to a World Cup and I felt happy. I wanted to make a World Cup too and make the country proud and I really feel we were able to do that with this win,” the Carenage youngster concluded. T&T contingent is scheduled to touch down at Piarco at 8:15pm Monday.
